Chapter 6: Unit Conversion Between Weight & Volume Worksheet

Recall: Weight and volume are two different measures entirely. However, with the right "fancy one," we may also convert between measures of volume and weight, and vice versa.

Fact: The only time 1 ounce ever equals a fluid ounce is when we are measuring water.

Question: Is there some other way we can convert between volumes and weight with other food items?

Answer: Yes! Just use more fancy ones!

Example

Fact: For honey, we know that $1 \mbox{ cup} = 12 \mbox{ oz}.$

Using the above conversion (i.e. fancy one), answer the following questions.

How many pounds does 1 liter of honey weigh?

How many liters does 1 pound of honey occupy?

A Table of Fancy Ones for Common Kitchen Food Items

You may use this table to convert from volume to weight, and from weight to volume.

Note: For items used in smaller quantities such as spices, the conversion is made from tablespoons rather than cups. Tablespoon conversions are given on the last page of the table.

Dire Warning

The tables available both here and in our course textbook are only approximations.

This is especially true for solid food items which are chopped, diced, or cubed.

Small errors could translate to large errors when scaling up a recipe causing either ordering too much or too little of an ingredient. (Both could be disastrous in their own way.)

If accuracy is important, it is wise to measure the ingredients yourself.

Example: How many grams of Raw Cream of Wheat are in 10 pints?

Example: How many grams of Ground Cloves are in 16 tablespoons?

Example: is making strawberry tarts. The recipe calls for 7 pounds 4 ounces of strawberry jelly to glaze the tarts. How many cups of jelly does need to use if one cup equals 10 2/3 ounces?
