Chapter 3: Metric Units Worksheet
Ubiquitous Units: The metric system is a base-$10$ unit system used throughout most of the world.
Advantages of Knowing the Metric System
1) If you ever need order to order ingredients from abroad, you'll be able to calculate how much you need to order.
2) If you ever need to "translate" foreign recipe for your kitchen crew, you'll be able to do it
3) If you ever have the opportunity to work abroad, you'll be ready to take on that challenge.
4) Conversion calculations are easier since every unit is in multiples of $10.$
The Metric System: Volume Measurements
$$
\begin{array}{|rcl|}
\hline
1 \mbox{ L} &=& 1000 \mbox{ mL} \\ \hline
1 \mbox{ L} &=& 100 \mbox{ cL} \\ \hline
1 \mbox{ L} &=& 10 \mbox{ dL} \\ \hline
\end{array}
$$
Note: For reference, a liter is approximately equal to a quart. More precisely, $1 \mbox{ L}= 33.8 \mbox{ fl oz}$.
Pop Quiz: Which holds less juice, $1$ liter or $1$ quart?
Pop Quiz: $21$ fluid ounces is what percent of a liter?
The Metric System: Weight (Mass) Measurements
$$
\begin{array}{|rcl|}
\hline
1 \mbox{ g} &=& 1000 \mbox{ mg} \\ \hline
1 \mbox{ kg} &=& 1000 \mbox{ g} \\ \hline
\end{array}
$$
Note: For reference, a kilogram is a little over $2$ pounds, and $30$ grams is about $1$ ounce.
More precisely, $1 \mbox{ kg}= 2.205 \mbox{ lb}$, and $28.35 \mbox{ g}= 1 \mbox{ oz}.$
Pop Quiz: $10$ ounces is what percent of a kilogram?
Pop Quiz: Which is lighter, $1$ kilogram or $6$ cups of water?
Another Advantage to Knowing Metric
Wine and spirits are typically sold in metric quantities.
For example, a bottle of wine is most typically sold in $750 \mbox{ mL}$ bottles.
Example: You may need to decide what the most appropriate U.S. Standard Unit is when converting recipes.
A Pumpkin Soup with Yogurt recipe calls for $0.25 \mbox{ L}$ of yogurt.
What would be the BEST U.S. standard unit in which to measure the yogurt?
